In an innovative move to promote responsible social drinking among college students, Albion College has partnered with Metz Culinary Management to introduce “Albion Nights,” a series of exclusive, themed events designed for students aged 21 and older. The program provides an educational and controlled environment where students can learn about social drinking etiquette while enjoying educational experiences. Metz manages dining services for the private Michigan college.
The initiative, developed in response to student interest and supported by the college’s Division of Student Development, is held at an on-campus dining venue. Events are scheduled from 9 p.m. to midnight one Friday each month during the Spring 2025 semester. Capacity ranges from 64 to 80 students.

Creating a Safe and Educational Environment
According to Metz General Manager Jeff Davis, “Albion Nights” is more than just a social gathering; it is an educational experience aimed at teaching students how to navigate social drinking scenarios responsibly.
“We wanted to create an environment that was safe, fun, and educational. Students learn how to drink responsibly in settings they might encounter after college, such as business dinners or social gatherings,” said Davis. “This isn’t just about serving alcohol; it’s about teaching students how to present themselves professionally and responsibly in social situations.”
To reinforce the educational aspect, events are designed to simulate real-world social settings. These include dinners focused on learning about different beer and wine varieties; wine-and-canvas nights, where students are exposed to the joy of painting; and elegant dinners that introduce students to fine dining etiquette. “It’s fun to watch them learn which fork to use and how to pair food and drinks,” Davis said.
Focus on Safety and Responsibility
Safety is a top priority for “Albion Nights.” Events are invitation-only, exclusively for students of legal drinking age. Each event requires an RSVP, and IDs are thoroughly checked. A two-drink limit is enforced using a swipe system on student ID cards, ensuring controlled, responsible and legal consumption.
In addition, all Metz employees working at these events are TIPS-certified, ensuring they are trained in responsible alcohol service and conflict management.
Positive Student Reception and Community Support
Since its launch, “Albion Nights” has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students. “We’ve seen an incredible 95% attendance rate, and the response has been fantastic. Students appreciate having a safe and fun option for Friday nights,” Davis noted. “This is about student engagement and providing unique experiences not commonly found at other colleges.”
Looking Ahead
As a pilot program, “Albion Nights” will continue through the spring 2025 semester, with student feedback guiding its future development. Upcoming evenings are planned to be themed around live music, karaoke, and trivia.
“We’re excited to offer programming that’s truly unique and makes a positive impact,” Davis stated. “We are continuously innovating, and it’s great to see the students enjoying and learning from this experience.”
